Dr. Martin says that "Through it all, my parents have been by biggest supporters. They have always taught me that I can do anything I set my mind to, acted as my sounding board for difficult decisions, been proud of my accomplishments, and comforted me during my trials and tribulations. I am so blessed to have their love and encouragement."

Throughout the years, Dr. Martin continues to make huge strides in the medical field for all women as she leads the wall in gender equality in this profession. She states that "It is really encouraging that we are starting to see more women enter into careers as physicians. However, simply being accepted into medical school does not necessarily level the playing field.

Across the country, there still remains a gender pay gap that is considerably wider for physicians compared to other occupations. It is also more difficult for women to achieve positions of authority within the healthcare industry. However, I have seen the medical community of Laredo continue to grow to be very supportive of its local female physicians. For example, Dr. Grace Snyder, a dear friend and colleague, was recently elected as the first female physician Chief of Medical Staff at Laredo Medical Center. This is a momentous accomplishment and highlights not only her aptitude for leadership, but also the eagerness of the medical staff to support her in this position. I hope to see this shift continue to occur locally as well as nationally."
